MANILA - An MRT-3 train was forced to offload a thousand passengers on Tuesday morning, breaking the railway's month-long record of operating without any such glitch.

In an advisory, the MRT-3 management said the "door failure" was reported at the southbound Araneta Center-Cubao station at 9:13 a.m.

The glitch may be caused by "stress on door components caused by leaning on the door or forcing it open," said the MRT management.

MRT-3 media relations officer Aly Narvaez confirmed that the door failure broke the railway's 28-day record of operating without any offloading incident, the longest streak since 2011 or in almost 7 years.

Tuesday's offloaded passengers boarded another train after 6 minutes.

The Department of Transportation is in talks with Japan's Sumitomo to return as the maintenance provider of the train line that traverses EDSA and ferries half a million passengers daily.

The previous administration, under former President Benigno Aquino III, had terminated Sumitomo's contract.
